This is our powder room on the first floor...nothing special or too large..but it serves its purpose well.
I still love the dark grayish-green paint that's been there for 7 years. However I AM considering putting beadboard on the lower halves of the walls this Spring (hmmmm). To make it more cottage-y looking me thinks and a window treatment. So I just did a tiny update to the bathroom wall to step it up a bit for right now. An easy and quick project!
I had an extra shelf in the garage from Alexa's bedroom project at our LAST house LOL..yup I kept it knowing I'd eventually use it. That day has come! Its just a simple unfinished shelf I got years ago for about $6.
And this is the mess I had a few weeks ago on my kitchen table. It was FREEZING outside and in the garage so the projects got moved inside for the day...well at least some of them. I had multiples going on all at once LOL. It was messy for a bit but that's ok as I got a lot gone!
And this is the final product all done & hung and styled with some of my favorite objects. I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (Old White)...two coats...easy peasy! Then I sanded it a bit to distress it and added some dark watered down paint (choc brown) to rub over the sanded areas. I wanted to match the distressed look on the architectural pieces that are hung on the wall...the darker distressing is almost black.
Two of my fave lil' birdies that I've had forever...they travel from house to house with me!
One of my fave old copies of "The Bobbsey Twins"...part of a larger collection of old books I have collected. My mom read "The Bobbsey Twins" to me when I was little so I have the whole collection along with all the old Nancy Drew books too..vintage style! And that's a "Riesling" wine candle that I got in Charleston, SC...I've got two...one I burn and one I save. I love that they are poured into cut-off wine bottles...adds to the lovely charm of the candle.
So here's the BEFORE!
And here's the AFTER!
Small update but it makes me smile to see some of my fave objects in there on that shelf!
This is the whole powder room, its actually a good sized room but I think it needs some more
cottage style via beadboard right? Or maybe some fab wallpaper..hmmm thinking on that one. That's me encouraging the hubster :)

I am thinking some fun wallpaper! I have been seeing wallpaper used so differently these days, but I am afraid to try it, so I will see what you do lol!
ReplyDeleteYes I've seen so many fun prints on wallpaper but its such a pain to get up...I may go with large wall stencils...I'm not sure yet. But something that I can do easily LOL...yeah right! Hugs!
DeleteI wouldn't do wallpaper...it's a B_tch to get off! I'm in the process of hiring someone to come over & get rid of it in 3 rooms & then have them prep & paint the walls. I will NEVER again use wallpaper. It was in style in the 80's & 90's. Love the shelf & what you did with it...looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYes it can be a pain I know...I've gotta strip the paper from 1 wall in my son's bedroom to turn it into a guest room when he moves downstairs. I've seen wallpaper that goes up and can be taken down anytime...but I may just go with beadboard or a fab stencil. The large stencils they make today are awesome. We shall see...that's an "AFTER" the holidays project LOL! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteThe little shelf is a lovely addition to your powder room, Suzanne! I like to idea of beadboard wainscoting for a cottagey look. I think a dramatic wallpaper or other wall treatment and window treatment could give it a elegant look. Depends on what look you're going for. I've seen some awesome wall treatments for powder rooms that are spectacular. Sometimes a small space like a powder room can really use something dramatic that you wouldn't use in a larger space.
ReplyDeleteThanks bunches Judy! I may try out the removable wallpaper on one wall in there to see...if I hate it I will have hubby put up beadboard ahahaha (hear him groaning)! Hugs~
DeleteLove this sweet little vignette! So fun! Thanks for sharing. Found you via WUW! Hope you'll stop by and say hello! Having a giveaway right now too that you may be interested in! Happy Thursday!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for stopping in! I will hop over & check it out!
DeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteSometimes the smallest updates can make the most impact. I just love this shelf and it adds so much to the room. Fantastic job. I have some of these shelves lying around as well so you've inspired me :)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Christine
Thanks Christine! I'm trying to make small updates to some rooms and BIG updates to others...after 7 years I feel the house is stagnant LOL so I'm trying to do little bits at a time. My dining room will be mostly finished this weekend and I can't wait to share!
DeleteJust reading some of the comments on walpapering. I have seen some GORGEOUS prints and I'm tempted to do some in my home, but I'm also super scared. Suzanne, we're all relying on you to be the guinea pig and send your tips our way :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I've seen some gorgeous wallpaper but I put it in one of my houses in a few rooms and dang its HARD to hang LOL esp if you have to match the edges. I had it done professionally in Riley's room and now I'm stripping it off ugh. But the new wallpapers that can come off (similar to contact paper) are very interesting. I may buy some to try and let y'all know how it does LOL!
