Who's Yer Daddy????

Hi everyone!  I know its been awhile...I apologize..but my head is still not in the right frame of mind yet. I'm giving myself the rest of this week and then gonna smack myself into gear. Its all just been tough and so I've been just letting myself have the time to grieve, cry, laugh, read and catch up on household stuff.  I have a few posts I started typing up but couldn't finish because I was boo-hooing while typing...LOL...yup I really was.  So I will save those for next week when I think I can get them out of my head and onto the 'puter.

**********

Today I just have a fun little post and item that I wanted to share because I love it sooooo much!  My mom got me my first one last year after complaining about cleaning my awesome Dutch Oven pot.  I usually use baking soda paste and a cloth but it wasn't getting everything off.

So she sent me this lil' cutie---

And it is GENIUS!  Have you tried it out yet?  Well we went from a family of 1 Scrub Daddy to a family of 8 hahahaha!  (I wish they came in different colors though...I should suggest that huh?)  I keep two in the kitchen, one in each bathroom and James has one in the garage for outside use.  It works on all kinds of things and really gets the yuckies off of everything.  And they are safe to use on so many household & outside objects.
Now the reason it has a smiley face...other than being cute, duh...is so you can insert objects and clean them on both sides really well.  For example you can run it over your sink faucets, sticky spoons, greasy tools, etc. You can also stick your fingers thru the holes to protect your manicure or to get a better grip...so cool right?  It also fits in small jars and such as well to really get them clean.  I also use one to clean off my produce...gets them clean quickly w/o damaging the veggies/fruits.  I keep the pot scrubber & fruit/produce ones in different places so I don't get confused...hence why I want different colored ones LOL.

They run about $5 and I've seen them everywhere from Home Depot, Target, Walmart to my local grocery store. But you can order them online as well.

I just love them and for $5 its like a mini-cleaning miracle and who doesn't like those??

Score For Less!

SCORE FOR LESS!

I love looking at catalogs, magazines and online stores for home decor....I do it everyday always searching for fun ideas to add to my home.  Lots of times though the prices don't go along with the budget so I either TRY to forget about it...or brainstorm a cheaper way to make it.
Or beg the hubs....that doesn't always work though ;)

About 2 months ago I saw this picture above in a magazine (I cannot for the life of me remember where) and they wanted $75 for this...OMG!  No way!  And I've seen similar ones on Etsy since then for $40-65 as well...too rich for my blood!  I knew it would be perfect for the center of my kitchen table during the Spring & Summer filled with blooms from my garden (or the store..hahaha).  So I did what I could....and asked my mom if my dad could make it for me LOL!

So my dad made it for me for my birthday and I LOVE IT!

My dad used some kind of exotic wood from Africa that he had leftover from a project...its super heavy and sturdy but you could use anything you had on hand.  He stained it a nice color that matches the other woods in my house but you could paint yours a color if you choose.
I'm thinking about distressing it with a chain & hammer just a bit and adding some Annie Sloan dark wax to it...do NOT tell my dad cuz' he will DIE if he knew I wanted it distressed hahahaha!
The vases I got at the Dollar Store for a total of $6 and he cut the holes in the wood to fit them specifically.  I went back and bought 6 more JUST IN CASE we have any breakages...always be prepared!

Of course I had to pop some tulips in it because they are my favorite flower.  And they matched my new yellow table coverings that I just got as well.  Nice & cheery...makes me happy!

Gorgeous right?  I just love it!!  And at a total cost of $6 for me its a definite SCORE!
I had my dad drill the holes a bit deeper because I have 6 CATS...that like to jump and eat flowers...so I couldn't have vases wobbling around.

I just love these yellow placemats with a bit of a ruffle to them...a bit more feminine and perfect for summer!  The runner came from Amazon.com and I adore the sunny yellow print!

See that rug under my table...I love it but its over 10 years old and has basically seen the last of its good life.  So I have a new rug coming from Ballard Designs this week that I will share once its in place.  Think sea grass with terracotta designs......

Organize It!

Its the New Year...that means a lot of folks (including me) are looking to CLEAN OUT THE CLUTTER and get their houses & spaces organized.  I don't know about you but clutter not only clutters my house but it clutters my brain...makes me feel a bit crazy.  I have been known to have huge mini meltdowns when there is too much clutter..whether its on my kitchen table, my closet, my craftroom, wherever.  And then I ATTACK...I will dump everything and go full steam ahead to clean and organize it until it makes me happy again.

And once you get an organization system in place you have to keep at it and keep adjusting.
Because your needs change over time and you find out what works and doesn't work.

So I linked some of my reorganized projects I did last year below AS WELL as some ideas I've loved and use myself from the web.

***********

I cleaned and decluttered a lot of areas last year so most of the big spaces have been done.
My craft room is always a continuing work in progress because new stuff is always coming in.

So this year I hope to get my basement in order (after the burst pipe flooding) and Riley's bedroom re-do. Finish my basement stairs and painting of those walls.  And to finish up my laundry room finally!
Those are the BIG projects for this year and I will be sharing those and the smaller ones along the way too!

I redid my linen closet  & it still looks GOOD amazingly because I found a system that worked well for me....see it HERE!

I also attacked my pantry which is always a place that I'm working on....it still looks pretty good thankfully...see it HERE.

And I did random drawers in my house including the Homework Drawer and my side table drawers in my bedroom.

I redid the vanity in my bathroom and it looks the same...next on my mission is my hubby's vanity!

**********

More Great Organizational Ideas on the Web:
I love great INEXPENSIVE ways to organize my home...most of these ideas are easy on the wallet but make a huge impact on that war against clutter!

This is a great idea for so MANY things! For cars and other small toys, small displayed items and
in a craft room. Would be great for all those bottles of glitters, flocks and paints!
And made from shoe racks...how cool is that.

Pot Lid Storage {via Pinterest}
Great idea for storing those pot lids if you are short on space or just need a new way to store them.
The insides of cabinet doors hold a lot of useful-out-of-the-way space....these are hung small white 3M hooks.  Inexpensive & useful!

Baseball Hat Organizing
My son has a lot of hats...I mean A LOT!  And I've tried many ways to store them and none have worked well...aka he doesn't utilize the system well which means its the wrong system. So when I saw this on Pinterest I knew I had to try it because you just easily slide the hat on even if its not a snapback hat..I think I will need 3 hangers and a bunch of shower hooks LOL.

Alexa & I swear by these type of scarf hangers...we both have a lot of scarves and this keeps them organized easily and you can see what you have (mine are organized by color).  These are only $9.99 ...great price for a little organizational help.

I find that I use a lot of those drawer dividers in my home. They can be pricey to purchase if you need a lot. So I buy them in batches and use what I have on hand till I can get more. So I love Jen's idea of using old cereal boxes to create your own, for whatever size you want and make them pretty. Great thrifty recycle :)

I LOVE LOVE this idea by Cassie...I hope to have a batch of time this year to do this (ahaha sureee)! We have so many DVD movies and they take up way too much space, they are always a mess and never in any kind of order.  This would make it much easier on everyone in my house.

Spice Clips
via Pinterest
Great idea to use those spice clips (like these here) on the inside cabinet doors.
They can be used for so many OTHER things than just spices!

Over-the-Door Shoe Hangers
I love these..inexpensive, easy to use and good for soooo many things!  Take advantage of
that area behind your doors!  Use them for cleaning products, toys, fabric, tools, pantry supplies and of course shoes :)  I use two of them in my craft room for all my paper punches...see pic above. I prefer ones that have clear pockets like these here, but that's up to you of course!

Using Magnets & Metal Sheeting
via Pinterest
Use metal sheets (pre-cut or have cut) and adhere to inside of cupboards with a strong construction adhesive. You can find all kinds of hooks and jars that are magnetic to hold your goodies these days.
Great use of space! These sheets here are 12x12 & inexpensive.

Pinterest is a GREAT source for ideas on organizing your home, car and office.  And of course many bloggers come up with more and more great ideas every day.  I just shared a few of my favorites and some I employ myself in my my home. And I'm ALWAYS look for new ideas that will work for me.
That's what you have to do is find systems/products/ideas that WORK BEST for you. Because it can be beautifully organized but if its hard to keep up or not organized right, you will find yourselves back at Square One...and that's just no fun!

Any BIG ORGANIZATIONAL PROJECTS in your future??

Winter Belly Pleasers!

Happy 2014 everyone!
Hope your new year has started off well, you've made your resolutions and goals and are looking forward to a fresh, happy & healthy new year!  I know a lot of you are suffering from this Polar Vortex weather system...sounds like a word in a Thor movie if you ask me...and its COLD here in Virginia.  Supposed to feel like 20 below tomorrow and I'm not digging it, it can go back to the South Pole for all I care...I'm ready for spring already.

However I am thankful to be in my warm house cleaning up Christmas decorations and cooking some good foods this week.  Once I get my Christmas stuff all packed away and the house cleaned good I will have some new projects and posts for you...my goal is by Friday to have all that done.  It takes awhile to pack up all these trees and then clean and I'm not rushing it this year...in the past I've rushed and usually put my back out..not this year. I've learned my lesson :)

So stay tuned for some fun Valentine projects, some new recipes and some more DIY projects. I hope to be in full working mode next week!  But I gathered some recipes for some home-cooked COMFORT FOOD goodness...I included some of my faves, some of my own and some I haven't tried yet.  So if you need some ideas for your winter menus I highly recommend some of these belly-pleasers.

********************

COMFORT BELLY PLEASERS

I'm not a big fan of mac-n-cheese...gasp...I guess the kind in a box just turned me
off over the years. But I do highly recommend this one, its the only one I will eat & so easy to cook up!

I'm a BIG fan of Ree aka Pioneer Woman...she's real, down to earth and one of the first blogs I ever started reading years ago.  And her recipes always rock...period. And her Chicken & Dumpling recipes is the BEST I've ever tried hands down...you will thank me and her when you make this LOL..trust me!

I love beef stew in the cold weather months...its hearty and just tastes soooo good when the cold is chilling your bones.  There are lots of recipes out there but this is the basic one I follow...but I add a bit of garlic, cayenne pepper and either pearl onions or large chunks of onions to mine. I also top mine with some homemade mashed potatoes. Next time I make mine up I will share the full recipe but you gotta have some Guinness for it..I hate beer..but I like cookin' with it :)

This is my hubby's fave dish in the winter! And given my Irish roots its no surprise I make it so much...so grab more of that Guinness cuz' you will need it. I add a bit more tomato paste and skip the peas because we don't like them...but we do add the cheese on top too. Its so yummy!

I love, love tomato soup...make it tomato bisque and even better served up with a grilled cheese panini and mmmm..mmmm good stuffs.  This recipe I tore out of my Southern Living Magazine in November and haven't made yet but the reviews were good and it sounds so flavorful.  Think it will be on my menu this week!

Hamburger Soup ~ Pioneer Woman
I haven't tried this one yet...its a new recipe that Ree just posted but it sure does look good and easy to get simmerin' on the stovetop.  Definitely on my menu this week!

This is my recipe...it is the ONLY meatloaf I and my teens will eat..its really that good. Stuffed with cheese makes it even better I tell ya!  Lots of flavor and even better the next day on a sandwich..mmmmmm!

This is one of my fave soups in the cold months...the hubby and I love soups and we eat them all year.
I follow this recipe pretty much to a T---except that I set some potato chunks aside before blending and then add them. I just like the bit of chunkiness they add to it and I top it off with a bit of swiss cheese or parmesan under the broiler too but you can skip that or use cheddar.  Everything is better with some cheese right?

I have my own recipe for pot pie but I found this one that was pretty close to mine. I skip the peas and use mushrooms, onions, carrots and asparagus in mine.  Its another one of my husband's fave recipes to eat although the teens are big fans LOL.

This is a newer recipe I found and adapted a bit...but we love Mexican based foods and this one is easy to make ahead on a busy day.

This is a soup I make on occasion for the hubs and myself...the teens don't like it and that's ok because I HATED it when I was younger too LOL.  But its easy to get going on the cooktop and simmer all day and serve up with some biscuits...makes you all warm and toasty. This recipe is similar to what I use again except I add leeks instead of celery.

My Comfort Food Recipes:

Other dishes I make a lot in the winter are below. I have my own special recipes for them but just haven't had time to type up the recipes because I don't know the measurements really...I'm a dash of this & a dash of that kind of cook...tastes good but hard to tell someone how much of each.  So they will be coming real soon...I have pictures taken but have to figure out the measurements for you all.

Chili...my chili is award winning good, no lie...its the bomb diggety and I will
have a recipe up soon I promise.

Spaghetti Patties...a recipe I came up with as a newlywed on a budget 18 years ago. Its still
a hit in our house & super inexpensive and easy to make.

Chicken Corn Chowder...easy to make even if you only have 30 mins.
recipe soon to come

Proscuitto, Carmelized Onion, Tomato and Cheese Paninis...so good you will slap yourself after making them! hahaha

Mexican Lasagna...good stuff and easy to make as well!

BON APPETIT!!

Our Holiday House Tour--Part 1!

Hello & welcome to our holiday home this year!  Warning: I decorate a lot for Christmas...I mean A LOT!  Which is why I'm doing two separate holiday posts for you so as not to put you to sleep with my photo intensive posts.  But I love Christmas so much and even though its just one month of the year, I always like to make it magical. There is nothing like a house lit up with the glow of many Christmas trees, the smell of greenery & cider and just the excitement of the holiday season.  When I pack the decorations up in January the house always seems so bare so I'm enjoying every minute now.  Plus if I didn't decorate members of my family would pout..majorly ;)  And yes it takes me a full week to get everything done including the outside.  And there are MANY things in my house that I use to decorate that have lots of memories and are special to me...decorating with items like this make it super special.

This is what we woke up to Sunday morning...a nice wintry covering of snow and ice...in fact its icing again today. I hate winter...no surprise to many of you that know me..but I do find this light coat of snow during the holidays very pretty.  Course I didn't have to go out in it nor shovel it ;)  Our front porch gets a tree too decked out in red lights, red burlap ribbon and pinecones.
*Before you ask why the cars are out welllll....my car is inside the garage and the truck is always outside BUT hubby's car got stuck outside because the other side of the garage is filled with items/furniture for GoodWill that he hasn't taken yet..oh well lol.*

Let's start in my dining room...my favorite room at the moment due to its major makeover (see more about that here).  The tree in the dining room used to be red & gold but I changed it over to a more rustic, vintage feel this year.

This tree got some burlap weaved through its branches, rolled up vintage Christmas music sheets and gold/cream ornaments mixed in with some sprays of fruit and pinecones.  Everything on this tree I owned already in my holiday stash so I didn't have to purchase anything for this re-do.

My new pictures in rustic frames surround my buffet now...more on that in another post.
On the table is one of my many Santa's along with his gold reindeer that I've owned for years.  Some burlap, greenery, my lanterns and a sled filled with pinecones & sheet music.  Again nothing new on this table this year, just going into my stash to pull out things I hadn't used in awhile.

Greenery is one of the most inexpensive ways to bring holiday magic into your home...its beautiful and it smells good.  I have many trees around my house that get a good haircut trim this time of year! :)  Another one of my vintage Santas in woodland gear, some gold trees and votives added to the mix.

This is the view from my front hall to the dining room...entry door is on the right.

This is my 9 ft foyer tree dressed all in reds, burgundys and golds--this is one of my trees that ONLY has amber/gold lights on it...I love the warm glow they provide.  This tree holds many of our White House ornaments (the old car is one) from over the past 20 years.  Also a Maryland Blue Crab ornament because I was born & raised a Maryland girl...and lord knows I love my blue crabs!

In front of the foyer tree is my large Santa holding his naughty good list :)  And a trunk full of toys I've collected...including vintage holiday books, an antique car and some of our 40+ Nutcrackers.  Alexa did ballet for 13 years and the Nutcracker every year...so we have MANY of them scattered around the house during the holidays.  I like to mix in fun animal prints when I can...just because I can...so that's why my zebra trunk makes the cut LOL!

This is the topper of my tree...lots of hydrangeas (my fave flower) and some swirly-twirly gold sticks from the floral dept of Michaels years ago.  My garland this year is of simple Magnolia leaves...I used to have a heavier lighted garland but I didn't use it this year...I wanted something simpler instead.

This is looking from the dining room across the foyer into the living room.

My living room tree is all gold & white...it is home to most of my Precious Moment ornaments that I've collected since I was young.  It also holds most of our ornaments from any trips we've made or I've made...so there are a LOT of ornaments on this tree that mean a lot to me.  This is always the first tree I put up (I put them all up but the family room tree by myself) and it takes me awhile because I like to thing about the memories associated with each of the ornaments when I pull them out.

Sitting next to the tree is my childhood rocking chair that each of my kids used as well.  It holds a Fisher Price "My Best Friends" doll...I've collected them all over the years from Ebay because I love them, always wanted them when I was young but never got one.  Funny how as an adult I collect MORE toys than I once had as a child...hmmmmm LOL!  And an angel that I've had for 18 years tops this tree.

Working our way into my kitchen & eating area...which is part of our great room and where we spend our most time.  Yup there are cats in some of these because it was dinnertime and well...I have 6 cats so they're always into something :)

That's Winston waiting patiently for his dinner hehehe...the door at the right goes into our mudroom/laundry.  I really want to paint my island black this winter with Annie Sloan chalk paint..hubby isn't on board..but that never stops me ;)

Looking from my kitchen into our family room...you can see both the family room and kitchen trees here.  And yes that's football on the TV..its football weekend...college ball on Saturdays and NFL on Sundays...always!!

Both Riley and I adore penguins..these came from Costco last year and proudly sit on my kitchen island.

At the end of my island are some of my collected antiques that I love..tins, lunchboxes, scales and more.  I tuck in some greenery and lights to add a bit of sparkle.

And one of my fave kitchen vignettes:  Baker Santa with an vintage toy stove (that I adore, from Ebay) that I added some holiday cupcakes & candy (from Etsy) to.  I tuck in greenery in my kitchen too..its easy to move around to clean and when it dries I just add new.

This is our kitchen tree...its all creams, sage green and woodland inspired.  I wrapped it in toile ribbon and grapevine ribbon (like the wreaths & yes incredibly stubborn to handle at times).  If you don't have a tree skirt, buy inexpensive material on sale (2 yds) and bunch around the tree and hide the seams...I do this for most all my trees.  They can easily be washed if something happens too!

My kitchen table with my vintage Coca-Cola crate filled with greens, an old pitcher filled with more greens and a folk-art Humpty Dumpty made by an artist years ago in Vermont.  I can't have real poinsettias in my house because of my flower-eating cats...arghhhh. But they don't bother the greenery..go figure!

Our family room...do not be alarmed the paint color is actually a creamy yellow but in these photos it looks brighter than it actually is LOL!

And here's our beauty...our almost 12 ft live fir that we hunted (in this post) at our tree farm.  Its a beauty and smells so good!  If you don't have a real tree get some of those Scenticles..they smell so yummy.  And my mantel, mirror and banner from other posts on the blog...see sidebar for those.
More pics of some of my fave ornaments on this tree to come in Part 2 including my vintage Coca-Cola ornaments I collect.  My tree skirt was made by mom mom for me and my husband as a wedding gift..it gets used every year !

This is my antique crate filled with greenery & twinkling lights...just adds a bit of "magic" to the other end of the fireplace.  Easiest & most inexpensive decoration to add to your decor...cut some greens, add some lights in a favorite container and tada..beautiful!

Here's a pic of me & Riley decorating the family room tree.  This is the tree the whole family participates in and is filled with ornaments that the kids or I've made.  I also buy them each 2-3 ornaments a year and they have quite a collection going..this way when they have their own homes they will have something to decorate their tree with.  And the ornaments are fun to look at because they chronicle their ages so well...Alexa's Barbie and RugRats mania...Riley's obsession with Star Wars and penguins and animals. I also have their baptismal shoes on the tree and some wedding favors from my wedding.
As far as I'm concerned you can add anything to a tree but what really makes it special are the memories :)

And now that we've finished half of the tour let's have some White Chocolate Peppermint Tea from Teavana using my new tea kettle that I adore and sit a spell yes?

Any questions or comments on anything...leave a comment & I'll message you back :)
Stay tuned for Part 2....are you tired yet???
